If you are the parent of a child with ADHD or autism, you may be familiar with the impact that raising a neurodivergent child can have on your energy levels, emotional well-being, and family relationships.
As the parent of a neurodivergent child myself, I became interested in how my own experience of psychotherapy positively influenced my well-being and the dynamics within my family. This led me to explore the experiences of parents of children with ADHD as part of my psychotherapy degree research.
I was struck by how few supports are available to promote parental well-being, despite evidence showing that parents of children with ADHD are significantly more likely to experience mental health difficulties such as anxiety and depression. My research highlighted psychotherapy as a valuable source of support for parents of neurodivergent children. Participants described increased self-understanding, improved emotional regulation, positive changes in their parenting and family relationships, and the importance of having a dedicated space to focus on their own needs. Many also spoke about the value of psychotherapy in helping them navigate periods of crisis and challenge.
I offer psychotherapy that focuses on you as a person, while carefully considering the unique circumstances of parenting a neurodivergent child. Together, we can create a safe, supportive space where your experiences, challenges, and needs can be heard, explored, and understood. Therapy can provide an opportunity to reconnect with yourself, strengthen your emotional well-being, and find support for the demands of family life.
